Why did my Lightning payment fail?

Lightning wallets may report payment attempts differently. Learn the common checks to make and how to avoid sending a duplicate payment.

Check the invoice details

Confirm the invoice is for the intended network and amount and has not expired. Some requests specify an amount; others may allow the payer to choose one. Follow the wallet’s display and the recipient’s instructions.

A route may not be available

A wallet needs a route with enough available channel capacity and acceptable fees and timing. Liquidity and route conditions can change, so a payment attempt may fail even when the invoice details are correct. The wallet may retry using another route.

Read the attempt status carefully

Payment interfaces differ. A payment can be pending while the wallet resolves the attempt, failed after a route is rejected, or successful after the recipient fulfills it. Check the specific attempt’s final status in the wallet; do not infer settlement from a temporary message alone.

Worked example: avoid paying twice

You scan an invoice, see a spinner, then the app displays an error. Before starting another payment, open the original attempt and confirm whether it is pending, failed, or successful. Ask the recipient to check the invoice through a trusted channel if the two sides show different statuses.

Use official wallet support

If the status remains unclear, contact the wallet provider using contact details you find independently. Never provide a recovery phrase or private key to troubleshoot a payment. Recovery and payment-history tools vary by wallet.
